Evaluation Q3
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Research
Before we began making our music video we decided on our target audience. As a group we decided that our target audience will be a wide range of people. Because of the generation of our song, we decided that we will have 2 different target audiences. For the young audience it will be 16-25 because of the modernness of our video and the fun party atmosphere. The older audience will be 30-50 because they will be the most familiar with the song and the type of music.
Questionnaires
To find out what our target audience actually wanted in a music video we handed out a questionnaire which asked about what their favourite genre was, what they like and dislike in a music video, whether they prefer performance, narrative or concept based music videos, whether they preferred upbeat or slow songs etc.
- We found that everyone but 3 chose indie rock as their favourite genre and everyone in the age group 31+ chose indie rock.
- They like this genre because of the lyrics and melody.
- All together they like videos to have a narrative and also performance based.
- All except for 1 preferred the music to be upbeat.
- We found that people are bored of seeing fighting, half naked women and boy bands who talk about love.
- Not one person had the same favourite music video but everyone liked a video that was more upbeat and bright with a storyline but performance based.
We also did a series of interviews and focus groups with our target audience to have a more comfortable conversation rather than them filling in a questionnaire.
Doing the interviews and questionnaires really helped to get an idea of what our audience wants. In our questionnaires we found that all people liked videos to have a narrative and performance element so we put this into our idea.
The target audience member profiles helped us to find more out about our target audience on a personal level. Kate, wasn't as keen on Ska music in general but did say that she likes our band Madness and wants to see a music video tell a story. She also said that she doesn't want to see naked bodies.
Meg, a girl from the younger end of our audience is a massive fan of our genre because she is interested in the culture. This told us that she is who we want to attract in our music video. She said she wants to see more promotion of the artist and obscure camera angles. Meg also said that she didn't want to see the overuse of flashy brands/cars/ etc because it detracts attention of the audience.
After all the research we gathered we began to form our ideas on the music video. Once we had an idea we pitched it to our class to ask for feedback from them. The feedback that we got was:
- Good idea just need to be careful that we don't copy the lyrics and isn't just a video which is just a load of people having a party.
- Make sure locations and cast are sorted out because we will need a lot of people.
- People liked it because it is an original idea.
With the feedback we got we decided to change our idea a little and make it have a narrative where Lewis the main character is going through the house and having a really strange day going into the different rooms of his house. We understood the comment about making sure it didn't just follow the lyrics and we will make sure that we don't with the different themes in the rooms.
When we had a solid idea we began to make our music video. When our video was near to completion we had a feedback session as a class to see how we were getting on. It was good to have a fresh pair of eyes look at it so any mistakes that might not have been noticed would be. The feedback we got was:
Positive feedback- People said that they liked the initial concept of the video because it is unique and fun which will keep the audience interested and also fits well with the genre of music we are doing.
- They were impressed with the fact that we had synced the lip syncing nicely.
- The fast paced editing where Lewis turns from one character to another because it flows smoothly.
- They found the video funny which is what we wanted the video to be, this way we can keep the audience interested and laughing.
Negative feedback to improve the video
- One of the big things that we need to change is to hit the impact points better this way it will make the video stand out better.
- We also need to start filtering the video so that the quality looks better.
- We need to get the beginning finished because with out the beginning the video doesn't fully make sense.
We had a second and final feedback session as a class to see what we had changed since the last session and any final things that needed to be changed. This time the feedback was:
Good points:
- Good idea,
- Funny and interesting
- Casting right - well acted
- Clear narrative
Bad points:
- Need more clarity on the rabbit hole bit.
- In bathroom scene he has jacket on going in but then doesn't have it on when out, isn't clear he is in shorts.
- Impact points at the start need to be edited a bit more to grab attention of the audience straight away, a lot better towards end
Gemma did a back with the track listing as the majority of the page with smaller images surrounding it, this is more conventional to our genre.
The feedback we got suggested that we use the black and white checkered effect used in the title and the way that the back is laid out from Gemma's because this is more conventional to ska digipaks.
My draft is similar to Gemma's in that it has the characters on the front hiding behind Lewis, mine is different however because of the positioning of the characters. On the back I have put the tracklisting, the copyright information, the record label information etc. to make sure we have all the conventions.
The feedback we got suggested that we use the image from my draft because it is more unique.
The feedback suggested that we used the font from this one because of the bold style.
Everyone also liked the brick effect used on the inside of Jess' draft, so we will use this in our digipak.
A final digipak consists of:
- Front image from my draft
- Brick inside panel from Jess'
- Black and white checkers from Gemma's draft, although not in the same place as on the draft as it didn't look right having the images on the back so we but a border of the black and white checkers.
- Bold block font

After finishing the digipak we did the same process to make a magazine advert. Researching the conventions from real media products
to see what we need to include onto ours. Again we all did a draft to gather our initial ideas before deciding on a definite.
Our first two ideas are very similar. The both have the checkered border, the same image as the digipak, the two tone logo and the release date and websites in similar positions. The only slight differences is that the album name is in different places, one has a rating and one has Madness' logo.
Our third idea is fairly different although it does still fit to generic conventions the same as the others. The checkered pattern, the logos, artist name and album name etc. It doesn't have the black and white border all the why round just a section at the top. The main image on this is the image used on the back of the digipak. This one has a rating and a quote 'The rockiest rock steady beat of Madness'.
The feedback we got was good and that we should use a combination of the two first ideas because they will have better brand identity with the digipak and will be more easily recognisable. We were also told to make sure we have the correct form of rating as NME doesn't use stars it uses a number rating.
we got very good comments and one comment which suggested there is too much going on, however looking at this person's psychographics, it shows that he is not a part of our target audience so wouldn't be interested in our style of video. The other comments say that we have done a good job and it looks like a professional music video.
In conclusion, our audience feedback during the construction stages of our music video and ancillary texts helped to form our products to how our audience wants it. The feedback after making them suggests that we did the correct thing.
